What Happens if Your Child Has a Cavity?
Cavities are common in children, and treatable! If your child develops a cavity, we’ll evaluate several factors before determining the best treatment, including:
The size and location of the cavity
How much of the tooth is affected
Chewing pressure on the tooth
Type of restoration needed
We will explain all available treatment options, answer your questions, and provide a cost estimate before beginning any procedure. Most cavities can be treated using tooth-colored composite fillings, which blend seamlessly with your child’s natural smile. In cases of more extensive decay, we may recommend a stainless steel crown or a full-coverage restoration.
To help your child stay relaxed and comfortable, we may offer nitrous oxide/oxygen analgesia when appropriate.
Tips for Preventing Cavities at Home
Good oral hygiene habits and healthy eating go a long way in protecting your child’s teeth. Here are some easy ways to reduce the risk of cavities:
Limit how often your child snacks throughout the day
Encourage regular brushing, flossing, and rinsing
Choose nutritious snacks over sugary ones
Avoid sticky foods that cling to teeth
Make sweets part of meals rather than standalone treats
Provide water or milk instead of sugary beverages
What Is Pulp Therapy?
When the inner tissue (pulp) of a tooth becomes injured or infected, pulp therapy can help save the tooth and maintain oral health, especially in young permanent teeth still developing.
What Is the Pulp?
The pulp is the soft center of the tooth, made up of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. It plays an important role in tooth health and development.
Signs Your Child May Have Pulp Damage
If the pulp becomes exposed through decay or trauma, your child might experience:
Ongoing or unexplained tooth pain
Pain that worsens at night
Sensitivity to hot or cold food
Swelling near the tooth
If your child is showing any of these symptoms, please call our office promptly.
How Pulp Therapy Works
The most common pulp treatment for children is a pulpotomy. This gentle procedure removes the infected pulp from the crown of the tooth while preserving the healthy portion in the roots. After disinfecting and calming the tooth, we place a crown to strengthen it and protect against future damage.
Pulp therapy helps maintain the health of both baby and permanent teeth, supporting your child’s long-term oral development.
